Pediatric oral health

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), tooth decay is one of the most common chronic infectious diseases in children of the U.S..  It is a preventable health problem that starts from the beginning.  28% of children aged 2 to 5 years have already had caries in their primary teeth.  At the time wherever they reach the age of 11 years, about half of children have experienced decay.  At the age of 19, caries in permanent teeth affects two-thirds or 68% of teenagers.  Low income children were twice more untreated decay than children from higher income families.  Problems such as pain, dysfunction, low weight and bad appearance can result in significantly reducing the capacities of the child to succeed in the educational environment.

Start early.  As soon as the first tooth appears, start by wiping clean every day with a clean, damp cloth.  When the teeth more come, go to a soft toothbrush.  You can start using toothpaste with fluoride when the child is 2 years and if your doctor recommends you use toothpaste with fluoride even earlier.  Don't let not a child of less than 6 years use fluoride mouth rinse unless the doctor or dentist the child recommend it.


Check with your child physician or dentist on the specific requirements of your child fluoride.  At the age of 2 years, most children get the right amount of fluoride to help prevent cavities if they drink water that contains fluoride and brush your teeth twice a day with a very small amount of fluoride toothpaste.  If drinking water is not enough parents of fluoride to children 6 months and older should ask on the need of a fluoride supplement.


It was known that fluoride is an important element in the fight against cavities. But for children aged less than 6 years, too swallow fluoride can be detrimental to his health. Fluoride can cause white spots appear in the permanent teeth of the child. Always inform your child to use only a small amount of toothpaste (about the size of a pea) and tell your child not to swallow but spit out toothpaste and rinse after brushing.


Always supervise your child.  Until the child is able to properly use his own toothbrush you brushing the teeth of your child twice a day.  After this, you should continue to keep a watchful eye to ensure that the child is to do a thorough job and using only a small amount of toothpaste.
