Acai: history, health benefits, and two delicious smoothies

The acai berry is a powerful superfood that is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. It also has a wonderful flavor that makes an excellent addition to smoothies.
3 stars
Some describe the taste of the berry as bitter, but with a little added natural sweetener, you can bring out the delicious flavor in this fruit. Try buying the frozen pulp of the acai. In the pulp form, it is easy to add this superfood to your next smoothie.
Although often called a berry, acai really isn’t one in the traditional sense. In technical, botanical terms, acai is a drupe. This means the seed is in the center of the fruit, just like in a cherry or a peach. Acai fruits grow on the acai palm, which is a tree that is native to Central and South America. The acai palm is harvested for its fruits, but also for hearts of palm. Both the berries and the hearts of palm have long been an important source of sustenance for the native people of the Amazon region.
When westerners first discovered the fruits of the acai palm and its many wonderful health benefits, some marketers of the juice and other products went a little too far. It was sold as a miracle weight loss supplement and anti-aging cure. Some even made the claim that the juice of the acai could cure cancer. Not only were these claims made with no or questionable evidence to back them up, marketers falsely claimed that celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray were endorsing their products.
Whatever you do, do not let the negative press keep you from using acai. Although many claims made over the last few years were over the top and false, acai berries are a genuine, nutritional superfood. They may not erase your wrinkles on the spot, cause you to lose ten pounds per week, or cure cancer, but acai berries are full of valuable antioxidants, healthy fats, protein, and important vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, vitamin E, calcium, and iron.
The health benefits of acai berries come from their nutritional content. Frozen acai pulp is low in calories and contains healthy fats. It has no cholesterol and very little sodium. It contains a significant amount of fiber and protein, plus vitamins A, B, C, and E, calcium, iron, and a number of trace minerals and antioxidants. Here are some ways in which acai is good for you.
Weight management. Acai may not be the miracle weight loss supplement as some manufacturers have claimed, but it can promote healthy weight loss and weight maintenance. This is because the berries are low in calories and high in fiber. They can help you feel full while also providing important nutrients. As part of a healthy diet and a regular exercise regimen, acai can help you keep a healthy weight.Antioxidants. Free radicals are those nasty little molecules that can cause damage to your DNA. This damage, as it accumulates, can create all kinds of problems, from premature aging to cancer. Antioxidants are compounds that destroy free radicals before they have the chance to harm you. Acai berries have more antioxidants than nearly all other foods with high levels of these helpful compounds, including red wine, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. The antioxidants found in acai fruits are called anthocyanins and flavonoids.Atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the hardening of arteries that leads to heart disease. Acai has been shown to prevent this hardening through the anti-inflammatory properties in the fruit. According to research, the juice of acai seems to be able to inhibit cytokines, compounds that are involved in the development of atherosclerosis.Cholesterol. Research conducted with rats has shown that including acai in your diet can improve your cholesterol profile. Rats that were fed acai and a high fat diet ended up with lower levels of HDL, the bad cholesterol. While the study was not conducted on humans, the results found in rats are promising and give you another reason to include acai in your diet. It is thought that the presence of phytosterols in acai, natural plant compounds that are similar to cholesterol, are responsible for this cholesterol-lowering effect.Cancer. Yet another promising study has shown that acai may help to kill cancer cells. In a cell culture made of leukemia cells, extract of acai destroyed up to 86 percent of the cells. It is important to understand that testing compounds for their anti-cancer properties in a culture as opposed to within the human body is a very early step in finding something that fights cancer. However, the results are very positive and more research will likely be conducted to find out the potential of acai in fighting cancer cells.Healthy fats. Acai berries have significant quantities of monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid. These are healthful fats that can help to improve your cholesterol profile and decrease your risk of developing heart disease. These fats are also known to help regulate blood sugar levels and insulin. For people with type 2 diabetes, getting more monounsaturated fats is important. Oleic acid is also responsible for keeping your cell’s membranes supple. This allows your cells to absorb nutrients more efficiently.Protein. Acai berries contain a nearly complete protein profile. A complete protein is one that contains all of the amino acids, or building blocks of protein, that your body cannot manufacture on its own. Foods with a complete protein profile include meat, dairy, and soy. Acai has nearly all of the necessary amino acids and its protein profile is more complete than most fruits. What different forms of acai are available? Acai berries do not travel well, so you will not find the fresh fruit in your local health food store. Most commonly, you will find acai as a supplement, in pill form, as a powder, or as a juice. You can now also find acai as a frozen pulp both in health store and online.Which is the best form of acai? This may be a matter of opinion, but the best way to get the pure, unaltered fruit, is to buy the frozen acai pulp. Acai supplements and powders may provide some nutrients, but the whole food is always better and contains more nutrients as well as fiber. Juices may be an ok option, but beware the extra ingredients. Read the label carefully and choose a juice that has plenty of real acai and no added sugar. Also, raw juices retain more nutrients from the berry than pasteurized juices. The juices can also be very expensive. Can acai be used topically? Yes. You may notice acai as an ingredient in beauty products, specifically, acai oil. The reason manufacturers add it to their products is for the potent antioxidants. Studies do show that the amount of antioxidants in the berry is retained in the oil and that acai oil is safe to use on skin. Whether it really helps to reduce wrinkles is not known. Are there any side effects or dangers associated with eating acai? In general, acai is considered very safe to consume. Some people may be allergic to it. Try acai with care if you are allergic to pollens or palm products. If you have any concerns, or if you are pregnant or nursing, consult with your doctor before trying acai.
The best way to use acai in your smoothies is to use the frozen pulp. This way, you get the whole fruit with all its nutrients and the fiber. Using the frozen fruit also helps you get a nice texture and consistency in your smoothie. It is similar to adding frozen berries. Also keep in mind that if you are using pure acai juice, the flavor is very strong. Acai tastes rice and fruity, but also a little bit like chocolate with hints of red wine. It goes well with berries, grapes, pears, coconut, and cacao. Have fun and experiment, but also try these recipes.
Acai-Pomegranate Smoothie
Pomegranate is another richly flavorful fruit with a deep red color and plenty of antioxidants. Together with acai, this packs a powerful and healthful punch. Blend the following ingredients together until you get a nice consistency.
1/2 cup liquid (water, green tea, or juice)Two tablespoons pure pomegranate juice or fresh pomegranate seeds3.5 ounces (100 grams) frozen acai puree, 1 tablespoon acai powder, or 2 tablespoons acai juice1/2 fresh or frozen banana1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberriesA little honey, stevia, or maple syrup to sweeten (optional)
Coconut-Chocolate Acai Smoothie
If you are in the mood for a rich, decadent dessert smoothie that still provides you with important nutrients, combine acai with coconut and chocolate. Make sure you use raw cacao for maximum nutrition. Blend together the ingredients until nice and smooth.
1 cup coconut or almond milk3.5 ounces (100 grams) frozen acai puree, 1 tablespoon acai powder, or 2 tablespoons acai juice1 fresh or frozen banana1 tablespoon raw cacao powder1 tablespoon coconut oilA little honey, stevia, or maple syrup to sweeten (optional)
For all of my smoothies featuring this wonderful superfood – acai smoothie recipes.
Lately, I’ve been getting the frozen 3.5 ounce Sambazon organic pure acai smoothie packs from my co-op. Amafruits is another brand I like. Your local health food store or even grocery store should carry these or something comparable.

Tips to identify 5 Hot cat health symptoms that require immediate Attention

No matter what love and attention you give, cats experience cat diseases. Recognize the symptoms of cat health is difficult because, unlike their human caregivers, cats are rather stoic soldiers. They go around grumping when they have a sore stomach.

Here are 5 Cat health hot Conditions which should warn you that your feline fights off the coast of disease or injury.

# 1 Loss of appetite

Train yourself to be a responsive and attentive care provider. Take notice when a cat has ceased to eat or skip a meal. If your disorder cat eating, drinking or swallowing, then it is a source of concern. It is a large red, flashing light that something is wrong.

A change or a lack of appetite can happen suddenly or slowly. Recognizing a change in appetite can be complicated if food is left to share in a multi-cat household cats. His appetite may not because it is faced with a hairball or she ate a bad mouse. Worse, she consumed a poisoned mouse and it is now poisoned, or that it is in the early stages of a serious disease as the disease of the kidney or fatty liver syndrome.

When your cat is missing a couple of meals, it is time for a visit to the vet. Not wait to see if it will suddenly begin to eat. The sudden decline in food consumption causes damage to the liver. It transforms into a vicious circle where the cat can't eat because his liver is sick and no food intake increases liver damage.

# 2 She is sluggish

A significant change in the energy levels of your cat is also a good indicator that something is wrong shot. Cats sleep much, as the 18-20 hours per day. However, if you notice that it has interest zero in his beloved toys or catnip, she is quietly you say that something is wrong. It has pain or fever and feeling lousy.

# 3 She lost weight

It probably is not much to eat. When cats are sick, they stop to eat. When you raise your cat is it feel lighter than normal? Weight loss goes hand in hand with loss of appetite, but it can also be a sign of kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes and cancer. Weight loss is considered as a sign of the cat disease and should prompt an immediate trip to the veterinarian.

# 4 She drink lots of water (urinate too much!)

It is fall to sleep while drinking in the bowl of water? The good news is that it is still drinking. Increased water need increases in urine. It is obvious that the two are linked together. After all, if it takes a lot of water, it has come out some time. Common causes of excessive thirst and urination include diseases of the kidney, diabetes and thyroid levels high.

# 5 Urination is painful or interrupted

When a cat using the litter box, a accidents stem off beaten, squats over a long period, Cree or repositions again and again, you have spotted a problem indicating one or more diseases of cat. If you could see his urine under a microscope, the chances are that you would find that traces of blood.

Male cats may lick at the end of the penis or suddenly lose his appetite, vomiting, or become very vocal during urination. More likely, he knows a complete block. A cat that is pressure during urination is to have a fire alarm emergency. Bring to a vet pronto.

When a cat strains during urination, it can only be a complete block because his urethra (the tube that drains the bladder to the outside) is broader than that of a cat of and is less likely to clog. However, if it cannot urinate it means that it can eliminate waste fluids of the body. A blocked cat falls ill in 24 hours and can die within 72 hours - do not wait for the weekend to go!

Your veterinarian can unblock the urethra by the insertion of a catheter. This command removes the obstruction to urine from draining. It is more easily accomplished with the early detection of the problem.

Urinary problems may be caused by a number of things, including bladder stones in the urethra, dietary causes, bacterial infections and less well understood, murky problem Feline lower urinary tract (FLUTD). This disease can be related to stress or a virus similar to humans, a cold sore.

Some cat diseases can be manipulated with gentle care and love at home, but the other conditions are potentially fatal requiring immediate medical attention. As a feline helping, there is a certain amount of on-the-job training, but delaying a trip to the vet or wait to see if improvements can be expensive or even cost your feline of his life.

Your relationship with your cat is what allows you to pass on your personal trials and the times rough. If you have lost her because you do not recognize a life-threatening but treatable condition you would always regret your ignorance? The answer is obvious, isn't it?

Bottom line: Don't be shy on the appeal of your veterinarian. Also, find a resource of confidence to you by CAT behaviour or cat care issues and your chances of having a delicious, loving feline partner and long service life become much better.

Common sense things to do and does not - healthy can prevent and reverse almost any Condition of health

The purpose of this article is to show several specific ways that philosophy can be implemented for making healthy decisions.

Here goes, one idea for each week in the year:

1. Responsibility-Take responsibility for yourself. You alone are the master of your own health destiny.

2. Philosophy-Without the correct roadmap to health, how can that destination ever be reached? Evaluate all life choices with the knowledge that you are a natural creature, designed to live in nature. Veer from this roadmap the least to have the most health.

3. Prevention-Prevention is not a vaccine, pill, or check-up. Obey your genetic design as closely as possible so when illness does occur you can know you have done the best you could.

4. Illness-The first thing to do when you feel ill is to stop eating for the first twenty-four to thirty-six hours. The digestion of food requires immune system attention and diverts the strength and energy the body needs to fight the disease and heal. Drink lots of alkaline water at room temperature or heated (see #6). When the fast is broken, eat no carbohydrates at all. Infections thrive on carbohydrates and in the acidic environment they create. Take probiotic (see #11) supplements immediately and antioxidant supplements after the worst part of the illness has passed.

5. Injury-Heat is a super healer. Heat is life, cold is death. Heat the whole body or the body part to speed recovery. Only use cold for the first few hours after trauma to a body part. Exercise the part as soon as it can be done without undue pain. Heat and exercise improve circulation and bring healing elements to the injury, speed their activity, and ferry debris, toxins, and pathogen carcasses away. For overuse injuries, there is no substitute for resting the part for a time.

6. Water-Try to drink 3-4 quarts of purified (preferably alkaline) water each day. Do it regardless of thirst. Drink more if sweating. Get it all done before supper so you don't have to race to the bathroom all night. Squeeze fresh lemon juice in the water to help reverse acidemia, which virtually everyone in modern society has and which is a fundamental, underlying cause of disease (1-2). Don't wash food down with water. This can lead to overeating and inhibit digestion.

7. Processed oils-Avoid hydrogenated and all other heat processed oils as much as possible. Hydrogenated oils are toxic and heat processed oils are oxidized, making them toxic as well. Best choices for cooking are natural, more heat-stable saturated fats such as butter, and oils such as from coconut, palm, sesame, and olive.

8. Sun-The sun is not the enemy, it is the energy that underlies all life. It has a critical impact on mood, immunity, general health, and vitality. Try to expose as much of the skin as possible to the sun every day for at least 30 minutes or so. In sunlight the skin synthesizes the most important vitamin/hormone in the body, vitamin D. Do not get burned since that can cause genetic damage to the skin. Use natural sunscreens, shade, and clothing to prevent overexposure. Use sun-mimicking, full-spectrum lighting in the home.

9. Cosmetics and personal care products-Read the labels. If the ingredients are not, in principle, edible, don't use them. The skin absorbs similarly to the intestinal tract.

10. Living food-Make raw food the predominant part of the diet. It is what every other creature on the planet eats, so why not learn from their wisdom? Supplement with food enzymes if eating cooked or processed, and therefore enzyme-devoid, foods.

11. Probiotics-Supplement the diet with probiotic cultures and eat foods such as yogurt (non-sugared) and other cultured and fermented products. These friendly bacteria fight pathogens, boost immunity, and synthesize vitamins, enzymes, and other nutritional factors. They are destroyed or thrown out of balance with the use of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals. There are more microorganisms in the intestinal tract than the total number of cells in the body. Grow the right kind and nurture them properly with these 52 principles.

12. Vitamins and minerals-Take full spectrum supplements every day. Modern factory farming and food processing diminish these nutrients in the food supply. The stresses of modern life also increase our needs. Larger doses than contained in the average diet have been proven to prevent and reverse a number of diseases.

13. Antioxidants-Take antioxidant supplements (at least vitamins A, C, and E) and eat fresh fruits and vegetables. The huge oxidant (acid) burden on the body caused by modern living needs to be counteracted.

14. Organic and free range-Foods raised in this way are higher in nutrients and lower in toxins. Such farming methods are environmentally friendly and more sustainable. Send a message to the industrial, petrochemical farm by diverting dollars to those who have foresight and conscience. Free-range foods are more nutritious (they follow the principle of #2) and are raised more humanely. A clear choice.

15. Nontoxic home-Choose the least toxic home construction materials and cleaning supplies.

16. Lab tests-Avoid medical tests unless there is a manifest problem and a test will make a difference in terms of effective treatment. False positives can kill with the stress of worry; false negatives send a person on their merry way while disease continues to grow. Also, if you feel healthy, be very skeptical of any test that attempts to tell you differently, and most certainly be hesitant to begin dangerous medical interventions based upon it.

17. Clinical tests-Do not assume tests such as prostate, colon, and breast screenings are necessary. They are unproven and are not 'prevention.' They put a person in the medical mill and divert attention from where it belongs: taking control of one's own health destiny. (This 'anti-medical' advice will make more sense after the next section.)

18. Variety-Eat a variety of foods but not at each meal. Variety decreases the odds of toxicity and broadens the spectrum of nutrients. It is not necessary to get every nutrient in the universe at each meal. Relax, your body has reserve capacity. Try to eat no more than two categories at a meal. For example, for supper, eat meat and a salad.

19. Cooking-Do as little of it as possible. Heat is the enemy of nutrients. When cooking, use high temperature for short time to preserve the most nutritional value. Quick grilling, double contact table top type grills, and the new steam ovens are good choices.

20. Dairy-If you choose to eat dairy products, get raw, non- homogenized, and non-pasteurized milk, cheeses, and yogurt if they can be found. If not, eat whole milk yogurts. Some people find a dairy farm where they can buy part of a cow and then legally obtain raw whole milk from it.

21. Omega-3 fatty acids-The modern diet is deficient in this critical class of fatty acids. To increase them, eat more cold water fish (if they are not laden with mercury or other toxins), wild meat, grass-fed meats, raw vegetables, and tree nuts. Fatty acid supplements are also a good idea to make up for the deficit, but be sure they are of the highest quality, properly protected with natural antioxidants, kept in the refrigerator, and protected from light and air.

22. Dental health-Diseased gums and teeth can seed the body with infection and depress the immune system. Keep teeth clean and do not permit dental procedures that destroy or remove tooth structure unless there is no alternative. If repair is needed, do not use toxic mercury/silver amalgam; use porcelain or gold instead and find a dentist who understands this. Find a holistic dentist who uses new technologies such as tooth-preserving laser.

23. Vaccines-Avoid them. Health is the best immunity. If taken, the killed varieties in oral or nasal form are most natural and safe. Don't believe the promotion of flu vaccines which studies have shown to be ineffective (3-4). Use natural supplements with scientifically proven immune stimulating and antipathogen properties, such as selenium, quercetin, tumeric, echinacia, astragalus, burdock root, goldenseal, vitamin D, and probiotics. Hydrating with a gallon of alkaline water per day does wonders in preventing and reversing infections (5-6).

24. Pharmaceuticals-Avoid symptom-based medications if at all possible. Removing symptoms does not cure disease, and there are just too many potential adverse side effects. No disease was ever caused by a deficiency of a pharmaceutical and therefore a pharmaceutical cannot be the answer (7).

25. Radiation-Avoid it if at all possible. All radiation is harmful and cumulative (8).

26. Don't diet-Just change foods, eating habits, and lifestyle. That will automatically solve weight problems. Skip a meal unless it is deserved due to physical exertion. Eating is not recreation, and to eat more than deserved is unethical (as explained in a coming chapter).

27. Eat less-Eating less does more to extend life than almost anything else that can be done. Don't eat unless hungry, and stop when the feeling of fullness begins.

28. Avoid sugar-Refined sugar is an unnatural food and is addictive and toxic.

29. Avoid grains-Grains are an unnatural food (in their raw form they are toxic) and in their refined white flour form are just another form of sugar. If they are eaten, whole grains are more nutritious. Sprouted grains are the healthiest form since sprouting converts grains to vegetables which can even be eaten raw (9).

30. Avoid hospitals and doctors' offices-More disease and death is created in this environment than cured. Except for emergencies, stay away and learn how to take care of yourself.

31. Nurse infants-The breast is the fountain of health, not just an item of adornment for adults. Formula is the granddaddy of all junk foods. Children raised on it suffer in innumerable ways throughout life. Even the incidence of something as obscure as myopia (nearsightedness) is decreased by breastfeeding (10).

32. Circumcision-Just say no. Circumcision is mutilation and removes functional aspects of the penis. If circumcised, learn how to uncircumcise (restore the foreskin). Those who do this come to understand what was lost.

33. Four white poisons-White flour, sugar, processed oil, and refined salt are unnatural, nutrient-stripped toxins. Avoid them or replace them with their whole natural counterparts.

34. Sunscreens-Don't use the synthetic versions unless there is no alternative. They permit overexposure and potential skin damage. If in danger of burning, cover with clothes, seek shade, and limit sun exposure until acclimated.

35. Sleep-Getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep or closed eye rest each day is essential. If sleeplessness is a problem, get more physically active during the day. If unable to sustain sleep at night, be sure to take a nap during the day.

36. Nap-Take a mid-day nap for rejuvenation. Even a few minutes can make a huge difference in the rest of the day.

37. Timing-Mornings are usually best for mental activity, afternoons for physical. Listen to your own rhythms and obey.

38. Nature-Try to get outside for a time every day. Take vacations in nature. The mind and body need rejuvenation by regularly getting reacquainted with where we came from.

39. Serious disease-Act now to prevent it. If stricken with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, or the like, reflect on what YOU have done to cause it. Do not just surrender to the medical machine. Get many opinions, study hard, and research all alternative therapies. Give acupuncture, herbs, natural diet, homeopathy, naturopathy, and other natural therapies a chance. Alternative medicine at least tries to address causes, which is a leg up on conventional medicine that focuses on naming and categorizing diseases, and treating their symptoms (11).

40. Beverages-Avoid them like the plague. Soft drinks and the like (including fruit drinks) are addictive, acidifying, and a sugar and chemical assault. Drink water. Juice whole fruits and veggies if chewing is too much of a chore.

41. Glasses-Avoid them until there is no alternative. Glasses are like crutches in that they weaken the very organ needing strength. Explore exercise methods to improve vision. (There are several methods available. Search the Internet under "natural vision improvement.") Consider pinhole glasses to relax the eyes and permit close vision more naturally. Use them for reading and computer work.

42. Don't be silly-Smoking, drinking, drugs, not wearing a seat belt, and standing on the top of a stepladder are invitations for disaster. Do the common sense things to give life and health the best odds.

43. Local foods-Whatever the climate, the foods that are grown there are the healthiest for residents there. Tropical foods are best in the tropics and northern foods best for the cold.

44. 100% complete-Don't be fooled. Talk is cheap. Nobody knows how to make a 100% complete food since nobody has 100% complete knowledge of nutrition or our biology.

45. Swimming pools-The skin is an absorbing organ. Unless you're of the opinion that a whopping dose of chlorine (a potent oxidant), algaecides, and colorants are a good idea to have circulating in your bloodstream, find natural water or pools that have been ozonated, treated with ultraviolet light, or otherwise maintained. If using a chlorinated pool, limit the time in it and shower thoroughly after.

46. House plants-Grow lots of them. They filter the air, produce oxygen, and add life to the home.

47. Fat and cholesterol-Eat it so long as it has not been unduly heat processed. Natural fats, oils, and cholesterol (the body makes this every day to create hormones and other healthy biochemicals) are the premier energy source. If dietary carbohydrates are displaced by fats and proteins on a calorie for calorie basis (not that you should count calories), the body will store less fat and be more inclined to burn the fat that is trying to hide in those pudgy little rolls.

48. Ventilate-Bring fresh air into the home and exhaust the old. Use a heat exchange unit to capture the heat. To freshen indoor air use negative ion generators and filters. Use a central vacuum system that exhausts to the outside.

49. Fever-The heat of fever is the body's mechanism for destroying pathogens and speeding immune response. So why run for an aspirin to bring the temperature down so the pathogens can proliferate? Believe nature, not a pharmaceutical company.

50. Food for age-The young and the old have the highest demands for quality food. Supplements and nutrient dense foods high in protein and micronutrients are critical for the young because of their growth demands, and for the elderly because of their decreased ability to assimilate nutrients.

51. Garbage-Judge health by garbage. The more compost created (veggie, fruit, meat, nut, egg, and dairy scrap), the healthier. The more processed food packaging garbage at the curb, the less health can be expected.

52. Birthday suit-We were not born with, nor designed to wear, clothes. Live where the least amount of them are required. Get them off at every opportunity such as in bed and for full body sun and air baths wherever you will not get arrested.

You will note that healthy choices are usually not in accord with conventional wisdom, commercial interests, and popular practices. You must be wrong in order to be right by paying attention to your natural genetic roots, and the SOLVER principles-self-responsibility, open thinking, long-term view, virtuous intent, evidence, and reason.

Taking control of your own health destiny becomes particularly important when faced with the tremendous pressures, propaganda, and dangers of the modern medical machine.

Avoid Allergies of natural health

There are tens of millions of victims of seasonal allergy to the United States. For many people who suffer from allergies, spring and fall - generally the most beautiful seasons of the year - is unbearable. Runny nose, sneezing, itching and watery eyes are all the problems that people with needs to manage allergies. Allergies and allergy related visits to doctors cost tens of billions of dollars each year. Be able to alleviate allergy symptoms, it is often the only thing people will do but many factors contribute to the severity of allergies.

A factor vegetable which usually contributes to the severity of allergies is consumption - or lack thereof - of fruit and, to a lesser extent,. Fruit are covered in pollen and by exposing the body to different types of pollen from different types of fruit, as well as to obtain nutrients in fruit, it will build a resistance to this type of pollen. Too processed, refined sugars and fats also make the body less able to prevent allergen cause reactions of histamine. Excessive amounts of milk, cheese and other dairy products increase the amount of the mucous membranes of the body product, so it may aggravate the symptoms of allergy. In addition to improving dietary measures, increased input in important vitamins can delay allergies. Vitamin B5 - that is commonly found in meat, broccoli and the lawyers - and vitamin E, commonly found in the seeds and nuts, are effective to relieve allergies. High levels of caffeine increase the severity of allergies, thus avoiding things like cola, coffee, chocolate, and other high-caffeine drinks is ideal.

Over-the-counter common allergies can help relieve the symptoms, but constant doses of pharmaceutical products is detrimental to the many natural processes in the body. There are often side effects with these drugs that include the same symptoms with allergies, including itching, skin, mouth, sneezing and runny eyes. Some individuals even go up to make injections to help reduce allergy symptoms.

The best way to prevent allergies in the developing countries is to maintain a high level of health and fitness. Regular exercise is vital to keep the body operates effectively and help prevent running amok biological systems of the body, which is what causes allergies. Stress is another factor that contributes to the emergence of allergies, as from stress, compromised immune system.

Allergies can be one of the most annoying and problematic health issues for many people. Suffering from allergies for three or more months of the year is enough for anyone to find a solution. Fortunately, there are options other than hiding symptoms taking pharmaceutical products. By introducing the allergen to the body at low doses by the consumption of fruit and vegetables and improving overall health with regular exercise, it is possible to make so that pollen and other irritants does not ask a histamine reaction.

Using body mapping to mark workers ill health

Last month's European Health and Safety Week saw renewed promotion of a technique for flagging up workers' health problems, especially musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), that has been used successfully by trade unions since the mid 1990s. It's a simple, usually pictorial approach that can work particularly well with people whose first language is not English and has the rare distinction of giving employees some entertainment in a health and safety exercise.

The technique is 'body mapping' - a technique developed in the 1970s at Nottingham University and pioneered by unions in Spain, the United States and Mexico to encourage workers to report ill-health symptoms. By 1996, bodymapping was at the top of the Canadian union movement's safety agenda and five years later unions in this country were actively promoting it.

The technique involves workers creating a 'body map' of health problems by sticking flags on an outline diagram of the human body to indicate any areas where they are experiencing pain or discomfort. Employers can then use this information to identify trends, analyse work processes and put in place measures to reduce hazards before workers' health is damaged.

Ouch! stickers

The effects of the working environment on workers' health are difficult to establish: workers often dismiss minor health problems as insignificant or unrelated to their jobs, so it can take some time to make a link between the symptom and the workplace. Other workers may be reluctant to self-report for fear of losing their jobs (see Please speak up).

The thinking behind body mapping is that if workers doing a job pool information about any health problem they are experiencing - regardless of whether they think it is caused by their work - patterns can emerge that might otherwise go undetected.

There are various different approaches to body mapping. The simplest model might use two large outlines of the human body - front and back views - on which workers mark (using stickers or a pen) any areas they are feeling soreness or pain that might be attributable to work. Colour-coding can be used to indicate levels of pain or different types of symptom, for example, physical discomfort, stress/anxiety and ongoing issues such as reproductive problems. In some exercises, workers might be asked to add notes to the diagrams explaining why they have flagged up an area.

There are numerous variations on the technique. A task-based approach helps to link the body mapping closely to the work: a worker mimes a particular operation and the others apply stickers ('ouch! stickers') to their colleague's body to identify problem areas and symptoms.

Whatever the details of the exercise, a common requirement is that workers in a body-mapping session should be doing the same or very similar jobs, otherwise the results won't be meaningful.

'The best body-mapping sessions are where you get a group of workers together - who do a similar kind of work - for an hour and a half, or two hours even, and get them to talk through the exercise together,' says Doug Russell, health and safety officer at the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw). 'Because it's by talking to each other that the ideas come out.'

Different jobs will generate different 'maps'. A body map by a group of drivers might be expected to show clusters of flags around the lower back area (as a result of extended periods of sitting or poor driving position or posture), the legs and wrist (from pedal use and gear changes) and stomach (as a result of digestive problems caused by inadequate or irregular meal breaks). A body map for a group of office workers might show clusters around the wrists, shoulders and neck (as a result of DSE use or stress) or around the eyes (indicating eye strain from prolonged screen work).

Armed with this straightforward, graphical information, the employer or safety manager can take action, whether it be training, changes to work patterns or processes, or a review of the equipment in use.

Keeping it simple

Workers usually know their jobs and the associated risks better than anyone else, but they may lack the opportunity or inclination to discuss concerns with each other or their managers. For the beleaguered safety manager trying to encourage workers to take an interest in, and responsibility for, their own and their colleagues' safety and health, body mapping can be a useful tool. It can promote awareness of health and safety risks and lead to workers thinking of ways they can help control risks and prevent injuries.

'Central to the exercise is drawing on people's experience and doing it in a collective way,' explains Russell. 'It helps people to identify the aches and pains that might well be work-related because more than one person is concerned. People often tend to think it's just them getting old or them being a bit unfit. But when you actually get them all together and they all say that working on that particular machine or working on that particular checkout is causing them aches and pains in the shoulder, you can see that there's something there and start to try to figure out what it is.

'Not only can workers identify the issues, they can often identify the practical solutions as well.'

A key appeal of the method is its simplicity. 'It's a relatively straightforward way to gather information about aches and pains, cuts, bumps, bruises, headaches, eyestrain - a whole wide range of potential occupational health issues,' confirms Phil Madelin, national health and safety officer at the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS). 'One way that it works very well is if you couple it with an awareness-raising exercise. I quite often recommend it to people as part of a range of inspection techniques in workplaces.'

Workers' playtime

Another feature of the technique is that it can be fun. If health and safety has an image problem, then an interactive group session with a handful of felt-tip pens and life-size human outlines can go a surprisingly long way to changing workers' perceptions. Madelin suggests one way of carrying out a body-mapping exercise would be during the tea break of a safety meeting, so workers can participate in an informal way.

As a largely visual exercise, body mapping has the advantage that it overcomes literacy issues and language barriers. Concerns about protecting the welfare of migrant workers usually focus on communicating safety information to protect them from dangerous situations. Longer-term health issues among migrant workers are a more complicated matter. 'With body mapping, you don't actually have to be able to read or write to show where you're having aches and pains,' notes Mike Gray, head of the ergonomics team at the HSE.

Biased picture

It's important to understand the limitations of the technique before you start. Madelin warns that body mapping is a 'first step' in identifying potential occupational health risks, but it's not the panacea.

'It's not scientific,' he stresses. 'Just because you've got a lot of people reporting the same symptoms, that doesn't automatically mean work must be causing it. It's quite possible to have a whole number of people reporting the same sort of ache, pain or strain for a variety of completely non-work-related reasons. So the results have to be interpreted with some caution.'

What body mapping does do, Madelin argues, is to encourage safety reps, employers and employees to think beyond physical hazards - trailing wires, worn carpets, objects stored precariously at height - to less-visible and often neglected health issues, such as repetitive strain injury caused by excessive hours in front of a PC.

To what extent the information reported remains private to the individual depends on the approach. A group session will require workers to be open about health concerns in front of colleagues, which some employees may find intrusive. An informal exercise that takes place in a meeting might be more anonymous, especially if workers don't have to put their names by their responses. For complete anonymity, individual maps can be circulated for workers to complete and the responses collated.

This survey-type approach removes the opportunity for open discussion, but it has its advantages. 'A set of questions to go alongside the tool has been developed,' explains Mike Gray, 'to try to standardise the things people are describing.'

These questions are based on the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire. Some experts believe they help focus employees' answers and provide more useful information by requiring respondents to indicate - using tick-boxes - how recently they have experienced the pain, whether the pain has prevented them carrying out normal activities and whether the pain seems to be unrelated to work, made worse by work or caused by work.

'I think the way it should be used is to monitor the effectiveness of interventions,' says Gray, follow-up surveys will indicate whether measures introduced to reduce MSD problems, for example, have been successful. What is important though, he cautions, is that a lot of people fill it in. 'If it's just the people who are moaning anyway, you start to get a biased picture of what's going on,' he explains.

10 years on

More than a decade after it started to catch the imagination of safety campaigners in North America and the UK, body mapping has had some notable successes (see boxes) and Gray says the HSE encourages employers to try it, especially with 'problematic jobs'.

'The biggest barrier to body mapping is the logistics of getting people to spend some time away from work to do it,' says Usdaw's Russell. 'But it has certainly worked in sectors where it's been trialled.'

Where it has been difficult to get workers together to carry out an exercise, Russell has used questionnaires and informal surveys instead. 'But they don't work as well,' he believes, 'because you don't get the interchange of information between the different people.'

Phil Madelin likens the technique to the HSE's stress indicator tool, 'which is 35 questions getting people's subjective views on a situation, yet highlights areas for further investigation'.

'I think employers should be as prepared to respond to indicators from body mapping as they are to any other indicators of a potential health and safety crisis,' he says. 'But what I wouldn't want is to see safety reps going in, waving a body map and saying, 'You've got an RSI problem - you've got to sort it out.'

'What I would expect a safety rep to do is to say, 'We conducted this exercise, it highlighted a number of people complaining of these sorts of potential occupational health issues. Obviously we're not saying they all are linked to work, but we think it merits further investigation. How can we work together?''

As part of 2007's European Health and Safety Week campaign on MSDs, the TUC and HSE produced a body-mapping tool that takes the form of a questionnaire (as described above).

Guinea pig health care

As I discussed in a previous article, grooming is essential for maintaining your Guinea pig in good health. However, you should be aware of as well other things.

It is very important to know a good veterinarian who knows much about Guineas. Some conditions of are not easily overcome alone.

Be aware of the normal behavior of your cavvy. It is easier to tell when they are sick when you know these things.

Normally, the cavvies are excited, energetic and fun. Be aware when they silent or lethargic. Loss of appetite is a good sign for example, cavvies loves to eat and if your from is not, something is definitely wrong.

If your cavvy is sick with diarrhea, be very careful, diarrhea can dehydrate the piggy very quickly and if not treated immediately, can result in death.

Some diseases are difficult to see. Symptoms can start at very low and slow progress in more advanced stages. Some symptoms include wheezing, eye flowing and nose, even hair loss. Things like the stones in the bladder and cysts may not be related to any particular affection they heave their own symptoms that may be more difficult to see.

If you suspect that your Guinea may be sick, and you have other pigs in the cage with it, isolate immediately to protect other potential infection. To give their own bottle of water and food dish, just not to be shared with other animals. Always wash your hands with SOAP after handling a Guinea patient antibacterial. You do not want yourself or your other cavvies for the sick. Keep the cavvy patient in a room where the temperature is constant and decently hot. Keep their cage isolated with a lot of hay and protect them from air currents. If your piggy has respiratory problems, difficulty breathing, most of the owners of line the cage with eucalyptus oil, it will not cure the infection, but it will relieve some symptoms. Try to apply on the tip of their nose, just a small dab and there fore-legs, which the tends to rub their nose with. Not put not in their fur, it will be the stcky of fur, pigs of hate sticky fur. Do not make major changes in their diet when your cavvy is sick. Keep the normal routine will help keep the stress of Guinea, low level. If you cannot get your piggy to eat at all, call a veterinarian immediately, lack of nutrition can cause rapid deteriorization of the cavvy health.

Here are some symptoms you must monitor.

Sneezing
Some sneezing is natural for the pigs, but excessive sneezng can be a sign of a respiratory problem. Follow carefully in the face of your piggy whether or not a runny nose. Guinea Pigs do not catch cold or flu, most of the respiratory problems in Guineas are caused by bacteria. Fungal infections are rare but also possible.

Cough
Coughing, sneezing, as normal is to some extent. Most of the time, it is simply caused by trachea minor irritation, possibly inhaling something dusty. Constant cough is more serious. It may be a sign of infection or disease. Kennel cough, in particular, is a serious disease in Guineas. It can be transmitted between species, including dogs, rabbits and pigs. If the cough is followed by or accompanied by other respiratory problems, usually a wheezing, is a likely sign of respiratory infection.

Wheezing
Birth breathing, wheezing is the usual symptoms of respiratory tract infections. This should be taken very seriously. They can be indicators of fluid in the respiratory system which could well become a pneumonia. If your piggy has these symptoms, go to a veterinarian immediately.

Scraping
It is also normal for Guinea pigs, but like other listed symptoms, excessive scratching can be an indicator of something worse. Many scratch could mean that your piggy has lice or mites. Fungal infections can cause as well, but it is rare. To treat lice, pyrethrin shampoo bath should suffice. Please note that the eggs do not go away so easily. Generally, more than a bath in the shampoo is necessary to rid completely of the lice, however, the bathroom must be at least one, if no two, weeks apart from each other. Pyrethrin shampoo can be obtained by a veterinarian, who will tell you how to use it. Lice look like tiny worms, Brown crawl in the hair on the surface of the skin. Mites are more difficult to dispose of them. They are difficult to identify because you cannot see their with a naked eye. There are remedies for this kind of thing home, bt prefer more vet care safe tobe. Chips are not a big problem with Guineas. They don't seem to do not much care for species and not remain not long if they are there. If you are dealing with a parasitic, always clean and disinfect the hutches(hidey_houses) and cages.

Milky white urine
A cavvy urine is generally Milky in appearance, but if the urine is conspicuously white and residues left after it dries, it may indicate too calcium in your diet. This can cause bladder stones.

Top 5 habits to improve your health

After a few simple guidelines, you can increase your chances of maintaining good health and longer life. Start with small changes and gradually increase your healthy habits that your body gets more healthy. Improves your health and you will find you dream less junk food, and it is much easier and more fun to exercise.

Food - we definitely are a product of what we eat. The challenge with the typical diet and lifestyle of today is that most people have no idea what they actually eat. There may be a list of ingredients on the package, but how many of them can identify you? If you eat in restaurants, even if you select a dish that you think is healthy, you may not know what are all the ingredients or how it was prepared. Restaurants and food manufacturers deliberately use ingredients and methods of preparation to make you crave more of their product. Their goal is more than profits, not your health. Even marketed as healthy foods should be examined closely.

Nutrient dense food is essential for the welfare and health in the long term. Don't forget to eat foods "whole" and avoid any type of eating plan that limits or eliminates all strains of nutrients. Fat is essential to the joints, muscles and organs. Same sugar, which has a bad reputation, is essential for brain functioning properly. The key is the right nutrients in the amounts of right at the right time.

Another essential element of a diet healthy is plenty of pure water. Your body is almost 70% water. Purification and replenishment of this element are essential to your health.

Exercise - physical activity is essential to the maintenance of health. Working all day and then sitting in front of a computer or a television evening screen all causes enont, fat accumulation and the bones to become brittle. Muscles, bones and even the internal structures of the body are made to be used.

The key to the effective exercise is consistency. If you just start, start slowly and add more as your body becomes stronger and more flexible. As your muscles begin to develop and your joints start to flexible can you will find easier to maintain a healthy level of physical activity.

Sleep - not having enough sleep can do much more than just make you tired. Consistent, quality sleep is essential to the health and General wellness. Numerous studies show that lack of sleep can have serious effects on health. "It is necessary to look at sleep on the same level of importance than diet and exercise." "All three are equally important for good health." Carl Hunt, MD, Director of the National Center on sleep disorders research.

It is important to understand the factors that can both hurt and help your ability to get a good night sleep in. Simple behavioural and lifestyle changes can have a dramatic effect on your ability to get adequate rest. Don't forget to plan your day so that you have the time to relax before the time of sunset and ample time to sleep.

If you have a long history of sleep deprivation have perhaps become so used for its effects to not even recognize them that the effect of a lack of sleep. If you have difficulty falling asleep or if you feel rested step after sleep all night, there are several natural remedies that can help. Good daily exercise is a habit that can certainly help your sleep.

Nutritional supplements - supplements are used several objectives - to provide minerals and nutrients, you get your diet to eliminate toxins and cleanse the body and to address specific health issues.

No matter how nutritionally balanced diet, the simple truth is that food has more nutritional value, that it was 50 or 100 years ago. To get the vitamins and minerals even that an apple was 50 years old that you should eat 4 today. To achieve all the nutrition your body must work properly means food, that you would have to consume excessive amounts of calories. In addition, some nutrients are difficult to obtain any or how much you eat.

Dr. Linus Pauling, two times winner of the noble Prize, said "you can trace each disease, all diseases, and each condition to mineral deficiency."

Stress, pollution, environmental factors, processed foods, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle increases the level of toxins in the body. As we age we continuously aggravate the effects of these toxins by the development of free radicals in the body. A regular pattern of detoxification supplements can help to eliminate toxins and reducing the damage of free radicals.

Although there are a few supplements that are necessary for everyone, because the genetic makeup and way of life of each person is unique, only you can determine what supplements you need. Many supplements are also available to address specific health issues. The key to effective nutritional supplementation is the quality and purity. Do a lot of research before taking any supplement. Find a person whose opinion you can trust and ask many questions. Also, trust your intuition. We have been conditioned to rely on the advice of a physician and blindly take everything that is suggested. You know that what is done for you.

Breathe - beginning to lower your stress by taking the time each day to breathe consciously. Take slow, deep 5-10 breaths, breathing in your lower abdomen. While you learn to relax and slow down your body will take time to adapt to the situation and respond appropriately.

It is very important to reduce stress. In 90% of visits to the doctor are symptoms that are at least partially linked to stress. Chronic stress causes chemical reactions in your body which give rise to physical symptoms of morality. These mild symptoms such as chronic headache and increased susceptibility to cold initially and can develop serious health problems. Your health is as much a function of your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes that it is what we eat and how much you exercise.

These 10 health recommendations will help secure your health and help you to live your life abundantly!

1. The most important thing that you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands...

By frequently washing your hands you wash away germs that you have picked up from other people, from contaminated surfaces, or from animals. We pick up germs everywhere on a regular basis, so if you do not wash your hands frequently you will infect yourself when you touch your eyes, your nose, or your mouth.

One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with the cold virus.

Wash your hands frequently! Introduce the rule of every family member washing their hands when they get home. It is a quick and easy way to reduce the spreading of germs.

2. Put meals in a crock pot before you leave in the morning...

When you come home from a long day from where ever, the last thing you probably feel like doing is cooking dinner. So, we just throw together something quick and simple, therefore sacrificing our nutritional needs.

The real beauty of slow cooking is that a healthy, complete meal can be tossed in the crock in the morning and then ignored until dinnertime. This is a real plus for working families but also convenient for stay-at-home parents who may have enough to do without stirring and stewing over a more complex dish throughout the day.

3. Get unhealthy junk food out of the house...

You are most likely going to eat some regular junk food outside of your house, like at grandma's, or at some party somewhere. Given that fact, why keep junk food in your house? You can't eat what is not there, so set yourself up to succeed. Store healthy snacks instead.

Since we often eat without hunger (purely out of boredom or other emotional reason), we should have some healthy snacks in the house instead. You can go to any health food store and buy snacks that are made with natural ingredients, and that are low in fat and sugar.

4. Make exercise motivating by choosing an activity you enjoy...

Physical activity is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Not only does physical activity make you look and feel better, but it is also critical for improving your health and extending your life. Being active significantly lowers your chances of developing potentially fatal illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition, remaining active throughout your life can help you stay healthy and disability-free as you age.

The real key is finding a physical activity that you enjoy and that you can do at least 3-4 times per week. If you are exercising out of necessity it will be short lived. Don't fake yourself out. The best form of exercise is one that you will stick with.

The ideal exercise regimen should suit your lifestyle, schedule, and present fitness level. Think about what forms of exercise you enjoy. You may love biking but hate swimming, for example. Also consider other factors. For example, do you prefer to exercise indoors or outdoors? Do you prefer exercising by yourself, or do you find that exercising with others is more motivating? Make it fun!

5. Drink plenty of water...

Water is excellent and necessary for the body and overall good health. Every part of your body needs water to work properly, and it needs a lot of water, so give in to it.

If you give yourself more water you will generally feel healthier and more fit because it flushes out toxins and other unwanted things lingering in your body. Water also replenishes fluids that help lubricate the internal components of your body, keeps you hydrated, reduces hunger (which helps with weight loss), helps to make skin look smooth and young, plus a load of many other benefits, probably even some yet to be discovered.

If you are not used to drinking water, it may seem hard at first. But, very quickly, you will enjoy the clean, refreshing way it makes you feel!

6. Get your hormones checked...

Low thyroid, low progesterone, and low testosterone are all very common and usually result in excessive weight gain, low energy, low libido, fatigue, muscle weakness, headaches, irritability, and a host of other symptoms.

Getting your hormones tested is very simple... All you need to do is order a saliva test kit, spit into a tube, send your tube to a doctor who understands bio-identical hormones, have him/her write you a prescription, and then have your prescription filled at a compound pharmacy.

I recommend everyone have their hormone levels checked once every year, especially if you are over 30 years old!

If you have any of the above listed symptoms, your hormone levels could have dropped off considerably over the years leaving you feeling like your half dead. I know, I've been there. It's worth doing!

7. Get regular physical check ups...

This includes the regular medical routine all men and women should have, plus regular dental cleanings, eye exams, and chiropractic adjustments. Don't wait until your sick. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

8. Search for natural remedies to what ails you...

Most people will let their doctor tell them what they need, or do not need. If you have a great amount of faith in your doctor, then that's good. But, most people will go along with whatever the doctor tells them without researching the facts on their own. It's your body and your health on the line.

Be open minded! There are a lot of natural products that can alleviate a lot of specific symptoms that you may be taking medications for. Medications can be very helpful in some cases but they are extremely toxic to the body. If you can find a natural replacement, or better yet, a natural cure for your health situation instead of a drug, then you'll be better off. Be proactive! It's your health and no one should care more about that than you.

9. Keep the stress away as much as possible...

It has been found that most illness is related to unrelieved stress. If you are experiencing stress symptoms, you have gone beyond your optimal stress level! You need to reduce the stress in your life and/or improve your ability to manage it.

First of all, determine what events distress you and determine how your body is responding to the stress.

Second, see if you can change your stressors by avoiding or eliminating them completely. Is there any way you can shorten your exposure?

And third, reduce the intensity of your emotional reactions. This is simply attitude. 10% of life is what happens to you, and 90% is how you react to it.

Some additional tips to help combat stress include; Exercise three to four times a week, eat well-balanced meals, maintain your ideal weight, avoid nicotine and excessive caffeine, mix leisure with work, take breaks and get away when you can, get enough sleep and be as consistent with your sleep schedule as possible.

10. Use natural vitamin and mineral supplements...

Like the names imply, natural vitamins are in a form that occurs in nature while synthetic vitamins are manufactured in a laboratory. The only benefit of synthetic vitamins is that they are cheaper to make, therefore less expensive for the consumer. Natural vitamins are worth the few extra dollars they command.

Vitamins in nature occur within a family of micro-nutrients, trace elements, enzymes, co-factors and other unknown factors, that help them absorb into the human body and function to their full potential. Natural vitamin supplements extracted from whole food sources maintain this delicate balance of complementary co-nutrients and are more biologically active.

Synthetic vitamins are usually isolated into one pure chemical, thereby missing out on some of the additional benefits that nature intended. These man-made vitamin formulas often contain fillers, stabilizers and/or salts that decrease the content of what you want to ingest, may inhibit absorption, and can actually deplete the body of other nutrients. Dollar for dollar you will absorb more vitamins and getting more benefits from a natural supplement than the cheaper synthetic version.

Read supplement labels carefully to distinguish the natural from the synthetic. Some products marketed as "natural" only contain 10% natural ingredients. You're best bet is to look for food sources on the labels - things like citrus, yeast, fish or vegetable names. If there is a chemical-sounding name or no source listed, it is most likely a synthetic supplement.

Conclusion

Again, these 10 health recommendations will help secure your health and help you to live your life abundantly!
