Bone health in postmenopausal women

Bone, one of the heavier organs in the body, is formed essentially two-pronged: one composed of cells, vessels and nerves, organic and other mineralized matrix composed mainly of a water solution of protein (collagen) which became highly integrated with calcium crystalscalled hydroxyapatite crystals. The three main types of cells in the bones are osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes.


Osteoblasts produce collagen and generate the matrix, which is then filled with hydroxyapatite - or calcium crystals. Calcium is deposited in layers called laminae, and they are traversed by minute channels called canals of Havers or osteons. Their dense arrangement gives compact bone is its great strength. In our life, our os is also resorbed or digested by osteoclasts, which break down bone, digest the matrix.

The extremes of this process are respectively called osteoporosis and osteomalacia.
