For many people who suffer from allergies, spring and fall - generally the most beautiful seasons of the year - is unbearable. Runny nose, sneezing, itching and watery eyes are all the problems that people with needs to manage allergies. Allergies and allergy related visits to doctors cost tens of billions of dollars each year. Be able to alleviate allergy symptoms, it is often the only thing people will do but many factors contribute to the severity of allergies.

A factor vegetable which usually contributes to the severity of allergies is consumption - or lack thereof - of fruit and, to a lesser extent,. Fruit are covered in pollen and by exposing the body to different types of pollen from different types of fruit, as well as to obtain nutrients in fruit, it will build a resistance to this type of pollen. Too processed, refined sugars and fats also make the body less able to prevent allergen cause reactions of histamine. Excessive amounts of milk, cheese and other dairy products increase the amount of the mucous membranes of the body product, so it may aggravate the symptoms of allergy. In addition to improving dietary measures, increased input in important vitamins can delay allergies. High levels of caffeine increase the severity of allergies, thus avoiding things like cola, coffee, chocolate, and other high-caffeine drinks is ideal.

Over-the-counter common allergies can help relieve the symptoms, but constant doses of pharmaceutical products is detrimental to the many natural processes in the body. There are often side effects with these drugs that include the same symptoms with allergies, including itching, skin, mouth, sneezing and runny eyes. Some individuals even go up to make injections to help reduce allergy symptoms.

The best way to prevent allergies in the developing countries is to maintain a high level of health and fitness. 1 Detoxification diet. In the first Phase, it is very important and effective of your digestive system of detoxification. Water is the key, and every day to drink about a gallon of filtered water is useful for the restoration of the normal functions of stomach. The color of your urine must be clear or light shade of yellow and drinking water is no-risk way to ensure that it is so. A contribution of the right amount of water per day, about eight glasses, also ensures that the acid in the stomach gets diluted and minimize the symptoms.

2 Exercise. The strongest link has so far been exposed by studies linking acid reflux is obesity. Having a good exercise routine during your week will ensure that your weight is kept under control and therefore help reduce symptoms. It is important to communicate with your doctor before you begin the routine, but understand that the body needs movement to stay healthy.

Although it is very concentrated with acid, it has been shown to improve overall health. Two teaspoons of cider should be mixed with water and consumed three times per day. This should be done before meals because it helps the production of acid and dilute poisonous toxins from the body, especially after heavy meals.

Seven Natural Ways To Sleep Better

This post will put to you to sleep—if you follow the expert tips. And here’s why you need these shut-eye strategies now. Americans have never been more fatigued. More than one-third of US adults routinely sleep fewer than seven hours a night, jeopardizing their health and concentration, a CDC study released last week shows. Skimping on slumber magnifies the threat of developing cardiovascular disease, the leading killer of Americans, and also boosts risk for diabetes, depression and even obesity, other CDC research shows.

More frightening fallout from America’s exhaustion epidemic: 50 percent of adults ages 19 to 29 admit that they’ve driven while drowsy in the past month, as did more than one-third of younger teens, and 28 percent of Baby Boomers, according to a National Sleep Foundation (NSF) poll released on March 7. About 5 percent of adults have actually fallen asleep at the wheel in the past month, the CDC found.

Use these 7 tips to help you sleep better.

What’s behind these troubling trends? Americans are too wired to unwind, the NSF’s 2011 Sleep in America poll survey suggests. Ninety-five percent of those surveyed spend the hour before bedtime staring at some type of screen, from the TV to the computer, video games, or cell phone, at least a few nights a week. What’s more, nearly one in ten teens are awakened nearly every night after going to bed by text messages, emails or cell phone calls. Not surprisingly, in light of these findings, 43 percent of survey respondents say that they rarely or never get a good night’s sleep on weeknights.

What’s the solution? “Very simple strategies and changes in your daily habits can powerfully improve your sleep—without pills,” says sleep researcher Alison Harvey, Ph.D., professor of clinical psychology at University of California, Berkeley. Here’s a look at seven natural, science-backed ways to get the healthy rest you need.

Bask in morning sunshine. Light, especially the sun’s rays, has such a potent effect on your body’s internal clocks that you can actually use it to reset your sleep cycle, research shows. If you tend to be night owl (like me), you may have delayed circadian rhythms. To shift to an earlier schedule, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up on time for work, force yourself to get up early and soak up as much sun as possible between 6 and 8 AM, by sitting in a sunny room or taking a walk after dawn. “Bright light in the morning cues the biology of sleep,” by influencing the timing of the body’s production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, says Harvey. “Even a cloudy day is bright enough to influence your circadian rhythms.” Exercise regularly. Working out several times a week enhances your overall health and improves sleep. As I reported in my Ladies Home Journal article, Sleep Cures from Mother Nature, research by Phyllis Zee, MD., director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern University finds that early evening exercise three times a week between 5 to 7 PM appears to make people pleasantly tired, contributing to sounder slumber. It may also aid in relaxing after work and shedding the stresses of the day. However, you should avoid exercising within two to three hours of bedtime, otherwise you may be too revved up to rest well, cautions Harvey.

Track your sleep habits with this new app.

Limit caffeine, especially in the evening. The NSF poll found that the average American drinks at least three caffeinated beverages a day, a habit that contributes to sleepless nights. And while you may feel that a glass or two of wine will help you nod off, research shows that alcohol actually impairs rest in a variety of ways, including adversely affecting REM sleep, making slumber less refreshing.Go off the grid. One hour before bedtime, dim the lights and sign off from technology use, advises Harvey. The bright light from small and big screens as you surf the Web, watch TV, or check emails stimulates the brain, instead of allowing it to slow down for shuteye. Also turn off your cell phone—and make sure your kids do so as well—since the NSF poll found that middle of the night texting is triggering electronic insomnia in rising number of kids and young adults. To help you relax, try taking a warm bath before bed. Some studies show that the slight change in body temperature after a bath serves as a natural cue that it’s time to sleep. Make your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep. Your bed should only be used for two things: slumber and sex. Keep your bedroom comfortable cool, which promotes better shuteye than a warm or hot room, and free of any reminders of work, which can make you feel too stressed to relax, explains Harvey. “It’s very important to associate your bed with refreshing sleep, so if you wake up during the night and can’t get back to sleep, instead of tossing and turning, get up and go into another room. Read or try another relaxing activity, such as writing in a journal, until you feel tired enough to go back to bed.” Cover your clock. One common mistake is keeping your alarm clock next to the bed. “We did a five-year research project on clock-watching and found it creates anxiety. Often people will wake up briefly, look at the clock, then fall back asleep, only to wake up an hour later and check the time again. They then conclude that they’ve been lying awake for an hour, giving people the impression that their insomnia is worse than it actually is.” Instead, turn the clock’s face to the wall or hide it under the bed.Stick to a regular sleep schedule—even on weekends. It’s tempting to snooze late on the weekends to catch up on the sleep you’ve missed during a hectic week. However, this habit throws the body’s clocks out of sync, points out Harvey. “If you normally get up at 6:30 AM on weekdays and sleep in until noon on the weekends, it’s like flying from California to Hawaii once a week, giving you a form of chronic jet lag, which is potentially devastating to health and well-being,” Research shows that consistently arising at about the same time every day is crucial to setting and maintaining a healthy sleep cycle. In fact, it’s even more important physical and mental well-being than what time you go to bed.

What keeps you awake a night—and what helps you catch more—and better—Z’s?

7 Natural Ways to Lower Radiation

Radiation worries are at an all-time high as we watch the unfolding events in Japan. At my own practice, many anxious patients and readers have called this past week wanting to know the health impact of radiation from Japan’s nuclear reactor meltdown. This article is intended to address your radiation concerns, relating both to the reactor meltdown and general exposure in everyday life, as well as what you can do to naturally protect yourself from exposure and reduce radiation load in your body.

Radioactivity from Japan has little impact on people in the U.S.

So far, the news is reporting that the four reactors in partial meltdown spewed radiation as high as 500 meters or 1,640 feet, according to John Beddington, U.K.’s Chief science officer. For some perspective, compare to the Chernobyl blast, which sent radioactive particles 30,000 feet high for months. Reports from last week found that minute radiation was detected in Sacramento, but the amount was extremely minor -- one-millionth of what people get from natural background radiation. Health officials assured us that it posed no threats to residents on the west coast of the United States.

That said, you should take care to avoid foodstuff grown or raised near the fallout zone. Spinach and dairy produced within Japan’s radioactive zone were found to have vastly elevated radioactivity, and the Japanese government discouraged its people from consuming these items. Radioactivity was also found in Pacific waters, just off the northern coast, close to the nuclear plant; over time, this radioactivity should dissipate as the reactor is cooled and ceases to spew particle ash and dust. For now it would be wise to avoid seafood caught in Japanese waters. Other than avoiding potentially contaminated food, there should be no concern for residents of the American continent. In other words, there is no need to panic or go out and hoard potassium iodide pills!

What is radiation?

To understand risks, it helps to know what radiation is. There are two types of radiation: electromagnetic and particle radiation. Electromagnetic (EM) waves range from low energy to high energy. Low energy EM includes electrical, infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet (UV). These, with the exception of UV are relatively harmless and, in fact, can sometimes even be therapeutic, such as the far infrared wave. At the high energy end of EM are the diagnostic and therapeutic x-rays like gamma rays. These are more powerful and exposure must be carefully monitored and limited.

Particle radiation includes electron, proton, and neutron beams produced from splitting unstable atoms from the likes of plutonium and uranium -- as in a nuclear reactor or bomb. High exposure to these types of radiation can cause cancer, genetic defects, and death. For example, in a 2009 New York Academy of Sciences report on the death toll in the European fallout zone of the Chernobyl accident, it was founds that from 1986 to 2005, one million people died from genetic damage caused by the radioactive fallout. In addition, numerous people suffered from thyroid cancer and leukemia.

Natural background radiation is all around us.

There is much misinformation about radiation that I would like to attempt to clarify. First of all, we live with radiation all around us: the sun and stars, rocks, earth, and even our own bones emit natural background radiation. Radiation also comes from television, smoke detectors, and microwave ovens. It is estimated that the annual average of acceptable exposure from the above natural and equipment radiation is around 1 millisieverts or mSv.

Let’s put this data in context. If the average acceptable exposure per person is 1 mSv per year -- and let’s say this is equal to 1 truckload -- then a simple chest x-ray is about 0.03 truckload. Put another way, it will take about 33 chest x-rays for an individual to reach their yearly radiation allowance. Make sense?

How much radiation exposure comes from medical diagnostics?

While a chest x-ray leaves you open to a small amount of radiation, an upper GI x-ray is equal to about 3 truckloads, and a CT scan is about 4 truckloads. Of course, this number sounds alarming, but if you had a condition requiring diagnostic imaging, to avoid it would be foolish and delay treatments that could potentially even save your life. Read on for some natural ways to reduce radiation load in your body.

7 Natural ways to lower radiation burden in your body

Here are some easy ways for everyone to reduce exposure and radiation load in your body.

1. Start by incorporating chlorophyll-rich foods into your diet, including seaweed, kelp, blue-green algae, spirulina, and chlorella. These plants contain rich minerals, such as iodine, that bind up the receptors site in your thyroid, so that any radioactive iodine you are exposed to will be unable to harm your thyroid. These foods also contain selenium and other potent antioxidants that prevent destructive free radical activity and cancerous growth, as well as chelating agents that bind to toxins and eliminate them from your body.

2. Eat colorful foods that are full of antioxidants, especially cherries, blueberries, pomegranates, yams, and sweet potatoes. These foods consistently assist your body in mopping up free radicals and toxins.

3. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of filtered water daily. To find out more about a high-performance water filtration system, go to Aquasana.

4. Increase your intake of vitamin C, E, and D to help antioxidant actions within your body. Or take alpha lipoic acid, a nutrient that protects cells from radiation damage.

5. Herbs like dandelion, peppermint, and chrysanthemum help the body detoxify.

6. Medically supervised detox programs like the Tao of Wellness Detox Retreat can support your body’s healthy cleansing function.

7. Finally, if you find yourself in the unlikely situation of excess radiation exposure, there are medically supervised chelation treatments using EDTA and other treatment methods.

I hope this article helps to assuage your fears about radiation and that you will use the information to live long, live strong and live happy.

The Natural Detox: Take a Walk

Start the year fresh with one simple habit that will improve your health and longevity: take a 20-minute walk every day for the whole month. A daily walk will cleanse your body, boost your energy, and improve digestion. Practice consistently and by the end of the month, it will become a new healthy habit that will serve you for the rest of your life!

This is the first habit in the 2011 Longevity Program, a yearlong plan of monthly activities that come from the habits of centenarians from around the world. The idea of this program is that by choosing a simple activity and doing it every day, you will gradually develop 12 new healthy habits by the end of the year. Would you like to do the whole year program? Look at my previous Yahoo! Blog “The Longevity Resolution: Live to 100”.

If you are interested in a more formal longevity program, check out my new book Secrets of Longevity 8-Week Program, a journal that will transform your health and lengthen your years.

January’s Habit: Walk (or exercise) 20 minutes every day

Here’s why: In my two decades of investigating the daily activities of centenarians, I found that every one walked for at least 30 minutes a day, and most walked more than an hour. Aside from the proven benefits for your heart, walking is the perfect gentle exercise for cleansing your lymphatic system, increasing your circulation, and improving your digestion by helping food move along the digestive tract.

Your body is naturally equipped with a self-cleaning process. But too much sugar, caffeine, processed foods, stress, environmental toxins, and too little exercise can slow the body’s natural detox function to a slow pace. Your body will process and eliminate many of the toxins that enter it, but overflow gets stored in the liver, lungs, kidneys, fat cells, intestines, blood stream, and skin -- which can result in chronic illnesses down the line. Physical activity unclogs your body’s systems, helping it to eliminate wastes more efficiently. Even though walking is a gentle exercise, it is still enough of a physical activity to enhance bodily functions and help detoxify the body.

The directions say 20 minutes a day, but of course, you can always increase the time to 30 minutes or more, as long as the exercise is gentle on your body.

Reward Yourself

First of all, think of a way to reward yourself if you successfully walk/exercise almost every day. It you give yourself a goal with a perk in sight, you will be more likely to follow through. Some rewards could include a fun outing or purchasing a brand new pair of walking shoes.

Stay on track

Now, to really stay on track, ask yourself these questions every day. It will help you stay motivated to keep a written record of daily answers.

• Are you doing 20 minutes every day? How was the experience? Did you look forward to it or did you resist it?

• How did you feel today compared to yesterday? Also, look at your overall energy level. If you have more energy, it indicates that the exercise is having the desired effect of cleansing your body.

• What are the obstacles that are keeping you from exercising 20 minutes every day?

Consider having a friend or family member hold you accountable for your daily exercise; they can simply ask you how it’s going every few days. Better yet, have a friend do it with you!

How to make it happen: An answer for every excuse

• Missed a day? If you miss a day or two, don’t feel like a failure! Forgive yourself and examine the reasons behind the break. What could you do differently next time? Then, recommit and continue where you left off the next day. Never give up!

• No time! First, see if you can find any wiggle room in your schedule. If time truly is an issue, find ways to work exercise into your schedule as it is. Park farther from your destination so that you will be walking ten minutes to and from. Walk to your errands. Take the stairs whenever you can.

• Winter is too cold. Bundle up, put on your boots if necessary, and take a walk, enjoying the winter nature. Another option is to walk indoors around a local mall. Also, you can try a different indoor activity.

• Not a fan of walking. If walking is just not for you, get your blood circulating with a daily 20 minutes of dancing, cardio, yoga, swimming, or other indoor activity that really interests you. An all-around excellent choice is tai chi, a gentle practice that can be done at any age and improves cardiovascular capacity, cultivates balance, lowers blood pressure, and relieves arthritis. Find a teacher in your area or learn with an instructional DVD. Whatever you choose, don’t forget to warm up before and cool down after exercise to avoid wear and tear.

• Too out of shape. If you are recovering from an illness or just feel completely out of shape, begin gently by exercising only five minutes a day -- but do it every day. Incrementally increase the time by five minutes each week. By week 4, you’ll be up to 20 minutes.

On January 31: If you have been walking every day, you have most likely created a new habit. Keep up the good work and stay tuned for February, which will focus on practices for restoration! Look for my monthly articles to guide you through a healthy and happy 2011.
