What is the Body Mass Index (BMI)?

By Amy Pusey - Health.Tips.Net

In the battle of the bulging waistlines, personal trainers and doctors alike use a common tool in order to help them develop effective dietary plans and fitness regimens to assist their clients in losing excess weight. You may often hear the term BMI, which stands for Body Mass Index. The tool is used to estimate an individual's body composition by showing a relationship between the height and weight. You may be curious as to how to calculate your own BMI. It is a simple formula, and can be learned by completing the following steps:

1.Multiply your weight (in pounds) by 703.
2.Take the result from Step 1 and divide it by your height (in inches.)
3.Using the new result from Step 2, divide that figure by your height (in inches.)
4.The result is your Body Mass Index.
Now, in order to put your BMI into perspective, compare it to the table below to learn if it falls into a healthy or unhealthy range. Keep in mind that even an underweight BMI is typically considered to be unhealthy. The categories are:

•Underweight (=<18.5)
•Normal Weight (= 18.6-24.9)
•Overweight (=25-29.9)
•Obesity (=30 or greater)
It is important to note that the BMI can overestimate body fat in extremely fit individuals, such as athletes, who may have a muscular build, as opposed to additional fat. Conversely, it could possibly underestimate the body fat in individuals who are older or exhibit other health conditions that may have caused a loss of muscle mass. Where children are concerned, an annual increase in your child's BMI is typically contributed to a natural increase in the lean mass and not fat content. Once your child enters late adolescence (late teens,) then a closer look at fat mass should occur.

Besides being underweight or overweight, there are other risk factors that may impact your BMI results. These factors include:

•High blood pressure (hypertension)
•High blood glucose (sugar)
•Cigarette smoking
•Family history of heart disease
•Physical inactivity

While maintaining your weight and participating in an adequate exercise program are important, a healthy lifestyle should also include a nutritious and balanced diet. This does not mean you need to consume only dietary foods or eliminate all of your favorite meals from your usual diet. Instead, evaluate your dietary habits, and to make it a healthier one, be sure it includes the following:

•Dairy. Include dairy products that are fat-free or low-fat. It is recommended that children up to at least age 5 consume whole-fat milk. This does not refer only to milk and cheese, but think about adding natural yogurt—it comes in a variety of flavors and makes a great snack or dessert alternative.

•Fruits and Vegetables. About 3-4 servings of each category per day are recommended. If you do not like the usual fruit offerings of grapes, bananas, or oranges, try something different to add excitement to your diet, such as mangoes, pineapples, or exotic melons. Be certain that you buy any canned items that are only packed in water; otherwise, they are packed in syrup, adding calories and increasing your sugar intake.

•Whole Grains. There is less natural sugar in whole grains and more fiber, so look at whole grain items that can include rice, cereal, couscous, bulgur, bread, and pasta.

•Protein. Healthy foods enriched with protein, which helps fuel your body, include poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, and lean meats. Remember, too much red meat can be very unhealthy, so limit your weekly intake of it and be sure to consume lean cuts of meat.

•Fats and Sugar. Whatever you include your daily diet, read the labels to help you make informed decisions. You want your diet to contain items that are low in saturated fats, sodium, trans fats, and added sugar. Also, monitor your cholesterol and consume foods that will help keep it low.

•Calories. Simply stated, watch your daily calorie intake. Do your best to stay within the recommended caloric range suggested for your body composition.
Does a new healthy diet mean you have to give up all of your favorite comfort foods? Absolutely not, but it does require moderation and altering some of them to lessen their negative impact on your diet. For example, consume them less often by cutting back to a weekly basis, eat smaller portions because portion control is important in every diet, and change how you cook the food. If you always served it battered, breaded, or fried, try having it baked or broiled flavored with seasoning.

10 Great Exercise Ideas for Family Fitness

By Lynn Yoffee
Medically reviewed By Pat F. Bass III, MD, MPH

Exercise doesn't have to be all about calisthenics. These activities help you make it fun!

Before our lives were so high-tech, family members were more physically active and got plenty of exercise naturally. Today, however, we go everywhere by car and sit for hours in front of the TV or computer. This sedentary lifestyle has been tied to obesity and a slew of related-health problems ranging from diabetes to depression.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that children who are consistently more active are likely to be healthier adults. And people who don’t exercise are at risk of developing high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. Sounds like a prescription to get moving — now!

Family Exercise: Shift out of Idle

"Childhood obesity is proportional to the amount of time spent watching TV," says George W. Shannon, MD, a family physician in Georgia who serves on the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. "TV should be limited to time after supper, to sit down and watch informative and educational channels such as PBS, the History Channel, or the Discovery Channel. Limit those TV hours."

Dr. Shannon also suggests limiting any other sedentary distractions such as sitting at the computer. "Put your computer in a common area so kids are not in their bedrooms for hours at a time," he says.

10 Great Family Fitness Exercise Ideas

Now that you've set the ground rules for sedentary activities, plan some family togetherness time. The idea is to get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise every day. So, how can you get your family moving in a way that's fun and doesn't feel like a punishment? Here are some easy ways to reach that goal together.
1.Walk to school. Lace up your walking shoes and join the kids for a brisk walk to and from school each day.
2.Check out physical participation video games. "I'm delighted with some of the newer action toys such as the [Nintendo] Wii games. People have the ability to play tennis, bowling, baseball, skateboarding, and snowboarding," Shannon says. "Kids love them. I'm generally trying to get kids away from the TV, but in this case, if they are swinging a bat or dancing, it's great."
3.Build strong bones. Be sure to include bone-strengthening exercise as well, such as hopscotch, jumping rope, gymnastics, or volleyball — any "weight-bearing" activity, one that you do standing up.
4.Take a tour of the park. Make going to the park a reward for a job well done, a good test grade, or anything that deserves a positive non-food reward. When you get there, play a fast game of Frisbee or pitch a ball.
5.Turn birthdays into an active adventure. Make your presents for birthdays related to activities. Plan a family ski or snow-tubing day trip or visit a nearby zoo. A bike makes a great gift for every family member, as does a basketball hoop in the driveway and a badminton net in the back yard. Make sure that Mom and Dad are included in the bike rides and pick-up games, too.
6.Get to the playground. Muscle-strengthening exercise doesn't mean just weight lifting. Take the kids to the playground to swing on the bars, climb a tree, or play tug-of-war.
7.Go to the head of the class. To learn a new activity, take a class together, such as martial arts, dance, or yoga — a favorite among hard-to-please teen girls.
8.Walk the dog. Treat your dog to daily walks that include the entire family.
9.Plant a garden. Whether you choose fruit and vegetables or just some pretty flowers, get the kids involved in an organic gardening project. They'll get some brisk exercise digging, planting, and weeding. Then the whole family can enjoy the fruits of their labor with fresh produce and cut flowers.
10.Follow your kids' lead. "This year I bought my granddaughter the Playskool Dance Cam because she loves to dance," Shannon says. "It takes a picture of a child dancing and puts it on TV dancing with cartoon characters. My basic words of advice are 'go with the flow.' If your child shows interest in some activity, such as dancing, encourage it and go with her to participate."

Kim Kardashian Sheds More Pounds But Says "I'm at a Healthy Weight"

By Deborah Dunham (ThatsFit.com)

Kim and Khloe Kardashian recently shot a commercial for QuickTrim in Miami. Soon after, Kim shared photos from their bikini-clad shoot on her web site which showed the curvy reality star looking slimmer than ever.
Kim professed she was proud of her body. "I really feel like I have reached my fitness goal," she shared on her web site, "and now I am toned, fit and at a healthy weight and I just need to keep it up!"

The 29-year-old reality star didn't let the start of the holidays interfere with her shrinking waistline. The day before Thanksgiving, she tweeted, "I am on my way to the gym...no excuse for getting lazy during the holidays." And on Thanksgiving, while waiting for the sweet potato souffle, fried chicken, turkey, dressing and cranberry, Kim was logging miles on the treadmill so she didn't have to "deprive" herself later.

Kim wasn't the only member of the Kardashian clan to focus more on her weight recently. Following in the footsteps of her older sister, Khloe, lost 25 pounds before her wedding in September. After regaining five of those pounds, the 25-year-old told UsMagazine.com earlier, "I am now back on my QuickTrim diet." While she admits her new hubby sometimes makes it difficult because of his love for candy, Khloe claims she can "eat the candy as long as I stick to working out and staying on QuickTrim."

In addition to using her sexy curves to sell QuickTrim, Kim is also using her bodacious figure to promote Carl's Jr. Premium Salads.

5 New Fitness Trends to Try

By Liz Kennedy

If you're like me, 45 minutes on the treadmill sounds like pure torture. But give me the latest fitness craze, and I'm raring to go. To help you navigate your gym's exercise classes, I tested and reviewed five of the latest gym trends so you don't have to.

1. Zumba
If you like to dance, you'll love Zumba! The class feels more like a party than it does a workout. Set to Latin music, Zumba will take you through both fast and slow dance moves that will burn fat and tone problem areas.

Verdict:
Not only was I hooked on the beats and dance moves after my first class, but I was also drenched in sweat. If the elliptical is getting too boring for you, Zumba is a great cardio alternative. If you like the bench press, however, this may not be the class for you.

2. TRX
From afar, TRX looks like some sort of torture device, but once you figure out all the straps, you'll be suspending your body weight in no time. Designed by a Navy SEAL, the TRX program will tone your whole body without you having to pick up a single weight. The nylon straps create two forms of resistance during your exercises -- your own body weight and gravity.

Verdict:
I could feel TRX literally working every muscle. Because many of the moves require you to use your core to balance, my abs were sore for 4 days after doing the workout -- a new record for me! If you are a very unbalanced person, you might want to avoid TRX, but for me, I will definitely be adding this to my gym routine.

3. Kettlebells
If you are looking for a cardio and weight lifting workout in one, kettlebells are the way to go. Invented by Russians in the 1700s, these cast iron weights are used by the Russian Secret Forces and U.S. Military. Through different variations of swings and lifts, kettlebells are meant to be an all-inclusive exercise regime.

Verdict:
Kettlebells are hardcore. Your heart rate will sky rocket and your muscles will burn. This may be one of my new favorite workouts because I feel like I am doing cardio and weightlifting in one. Thirty minutes of kettlebells and you are done.

4. The Bar Method
Using isometrics, The Bar Method creates long, lean sculpted muscles. By simply using a ballet bar, the class takes you through interval training that focuses on one major muscle group at a time. By contracting and stretching muscles, The Bar Method targets those hard to reach places like buns, thighs, triceps, and abs, with zero impact.

Verdict:
It looks easy, but let me tell you, it's not. I was shaking. Literally. The Bar Method is a fun alternative to a ballet class and I can see how it would get your glutes in shape if done routinely. The same movements are done every single class, however, and that gets plain old boring to me.
Watch how The Bar Method works

5. Hot Yoga
Turn the heat up on your regular yoga practice with hot yoga. With temperatures around 105 degrees and humidity between 30-40 percent, hot yoga is meant to add intensity to your normal practice. Because of the heat, your body will work harder and therefore get stronger. Toxins in your body will also be released as you drip sweat.

Verdict:
If you can't take the heat, get out of the yoga studio. Hot yoga is definitely not for everyone, especially if you don’t like to profusely sweat. I personally love a good sweat, so I really enjoyed the class. It took me a few sessions before I felt fully comfortable in the hot room, but after awhile I saw the added flexibility benefit. Though you are sweating and your heart rate is elevated, if you are looking for cardio or strength training, this isn't the class for you.

Instant Ab Flatteners

By Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief - Posted on Fri, Dec 19, 2008, 1:36 pm PST

Achieving a toned, sexy tummy might seem like a pipe dream this time of year. Baggy sweaters abound, egg nog is served and Frosty the Snowman doesn't offer much in the way of flat-belly inspiration. But getting a sleek, sexy stomach is easier than you think. Spend just five minutes a day on toning your abs and you'll get an amazing middle.
We rounded up five of the most effective tummy toners around. Work three or four of these exercises into your routine (easing them in will minimize soreness). Do the number of reps indicated, resting one minute between moves. The only equipment you will need is a hand towel. Washboard abs, here you come!

Pike 90
Lie faceup; raise legs until perpendicular to floor, feet flexed. Lower right leg so it hovers 1 or 2 inches off floor and place hands lightly behind head. In this position, do 15 crunches, lifting chest toward ceiling and lowering. Switch legs and repeat.

Crunchy frog
Sit with knees bent, feet flat. Keeping legs together, raise feet several inches and bring knees toward chest. Wrap arms around knees without touching legs. Extend legs and stretch arms to sides, palms forward. Return to wrapped-arm position; repeat. Do 15 reps.

Tornado
Stand with feet hip-width apart, right leg in front of left, right foot turned out. Bend elbows and raise arms out to sides at shoulder level (like goalposts). In one motion, raise right knee to lowered right elbow. Return to start; switch sides and repeat to complete one rep. Do 15 reps.

Corkscrew
Lie faceup. Press legs together and raise them toward ceiling until they're at a 90-degree angle, with knees slightly bent and toes pointed. Raise butt and legs off floor using ab muscles; twist legs slightly to left. Repeat, twisting to right, for one rep. Do 15 reps.

Side arm balance
Start on floor on knees. Lean to left and place left hand on floor under shoulder; extend right arm up and to left, palm down. Straighten right legs out to right with foot on floor, resting on left knee. Hold for 5 breaths. Return to start; switch sides. Repeat twice per side.
